We're All Terrible at Flirting

From this write-up, it’s unclear whether or not the study addressed participants’ confidence in their assessment of whether or not the other person was flirting, or their confidence in how accurately their own flirting would be perceived. But I bet this fits into a larger pattern of people being WAY overconfident in their ability to perceive and send subtle social cues. For instance, people are also overconfident in their lie detection skills.

tl;dr encouraging explicit communication is probably useful *in general*, because implicit communication just doesn’t work very well in the complex societies we’ve created over the past several millennia.
