Why is service work such a dirty word? Why are we so obsessed with trashing service workers and acting like they don’t fully belong in society, that we’ll tolerate them because we need their labour, but we’ll still look down upon them for not being smart/good/creative/driven enough to get out of service? Part of it, obviously, is a class divide. Service work pays poorly, and thus most people in service come from the lower and working classes and are destined to stay there, thanks to the lack of class mobility in the US.

There’s also a certain sense that acknowledging the humanity of service workers would be to admit that maybe we are exploiting them, which would make us uncomfortable. If the services they are providing are valuable, maybe we should try actually paying them and offering benefits. If they are human beings, maybe they shouldn’t be trapped in abusive and unpleasant working environments. If they are to be treated as social equals, how do we draw distinctions between ‘us,’ the elite, those who are served, and ‘them,’ those who are supposed to do the serving?
